It's 1916, in some village off Naples, Italy. Massimo has been playing with his friends on the beach near their house. He comes in because he's hungry (Massimo is eleven years old).
His grandfather: "Massimo, come here"
Massimo: "I don't want to"
His grandfather laughs, then he gets up, goes over to Massimo and hugs him. Massimo busy eating his favourite cheese enjoys the hug but shrugs it off so that his grandfather can leave him to his cheese. He steps back to admire Massimo in his eating and then caresses his hair, Massimo looks up.
Massimo: "What?"
His grandfather: "I have something to give you"
Massimo (springs out of his chair, mouth full): "Where?"
He rushes his grandfather to his room, and then waits. His grandfather sits on the bed, lets a sigh out and then moves a case on the bed and puts it on his lap. It's about four by three feet, plain light brown leather. Massimo looks slightly disappointed, but still interested.
His grandfather: "I bought you this today"
Massimo (his eyebrows raise slightly): "Is there anything in it?"
His grandfather (lets another sigh out): "... no, it's a case... come here"
Massimo's his eyebrows come down, he pauses, then approaches his grandfather.
His grandfather: "Did your mother not tell you?", Massimo looks up innocently, "Did your mother not tell you you're moving to Greece in two weeks?"
Two weeks later. Massimo's case is on his bed, closed, with some shirts resting on top of it. His mother enters the room.
His mother (pointing to the shirts): "What are these doing here?"
Massimo: "There's no place for them"
His mother: "What do you mean there's no place for them, I just put them in, here, let me see..", she approaches the bed.
Massimo: "No", jumps in her way to block her from getting to the case.
