Deep deep in the woods, one night, when all were asleep, except for the wide open eyes of the owls, one ant woke itself up for its mission. It put its coat on, washed its face and closed the door behind it very slowly, so as not to wake up anybody, because if it did, they would have asked where it was going, and it would have sounded too crazy.
It crawled up out of its little hole, looked around, and walked on. Through tall grass, in between grass, around mud holes, and on and on, and then up a tree. Up the tree so that it could take a good look around to see where all the bears were sleeping. It was a dark dark night, so it had to squint its eyes real hard, and so it did just that. Down it came. To the left, and marched on, until it got to the first bear.
It took a good look around, and then it climbed. Over the bear's left toe, up through his leg, saying goodnight to the little friends who lived there, over his belly, across his chest, and as the bear turned to sleep on his side, the little ant ran like hell. It was a close one. Still, over his shoulders, across his cheek, and finally it got to his ear, the ant's final destination.
It took a good look around, and noticed the bear moving with his breathing. And then, it listened to all the sounds, and noticed the bear’s snoring. The ant then braced itself and came closer to his ear, and spoke in between his snoring. It said to the bear: “Hey, Mr. Bear, listen to me but don’t wake up. I came to tell you something”. The ant took a little breath and continued, “I’m a little ant and you are a big bear. Because I’m so small, you sometimes don’t see me. And because you’re so big and so tall, if I shouted from the top of my voice to tell you to watch your step you won’t hear me. Just the other day you stepped on my little brother Jimmy and squashed him. I know I have 124 other brothers but I really liked Jimmy. Now, I’m not saying that you’re a bad bear, you’re probably a very nice one, but I am asking you to watch your step every now and then. I’m not asking you to look at the ground all the time, because I know that if you did you’ll probably end up banging your head on the tree branches. So, all I’m asking you is to watch your steps every now and then. Bear, thank you very much”.
